December 2017 Principal’s Letter

December 4, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians,

December is a very busy month here at Olmsted. A number of activities are taking place both in the school and outside of the school involving Olmsted students.

On Friday December 8th 23 juniors and seniors will be induced into Olmsted’s National Honor Society. The Induction Ceremony is at 1:30 p.m. with a reception to follow.

On Saturday December 9th the Olmsted Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. Bryan Pullins will play at Christmas in University starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by University Councilman Rasheed Wyatt and brings the University District community together to help celebrate the holidays. A number of Olmsted seniors will also be assisting with this event.

Band, Orchestra, and Chorus student have been practicing very hard for our Winter Concert. There will be two performances of the concert on December 19th. The first will be at 9:45 a.m. High school students will attend this concert. The second performance will be at 1:00 p.m. and middle school students will attend this performance. Parents and guests are welcome to attend either concert at your convenience.

With winter fast approaching it is important to remind you to listen to the radio or television for school closings. Announcements will be made over the media and via an automated call from the district to all parents. Please do not call the school as there will be no one here to answer your call. Also, if the weather is bad, please listen for closings. There have been instances, in prior years, where students have been dropped off when school was closed. If not for being noticed by the maintenance personnel, students would have been stranded outside. Also, if the weather should get bad during the school day and afterschool activities are cancelled students will go home on the regular bus run. We cannot hold students afterschool. Last year there were a number of instances where staff waited with students for over an hour after dismissal time for parents to arrive. If students do not take the bus they will have to be picked up on time.

Work on the new school roof should be completed this week. I thank everyone for being patient with the process. Due to the sensitivity of our alarm system we have had a number of fire drills, including one today, because the sensors picked up smoke from the work on the roof. Hopefully, we can get back to normal soon.

From last month’s principal’s letter: Most students in grades 5-8 ride the yellow bus each day. In the event they are going to be picked up they must have a note from a parent. Unless we have the note students will be put on the bus. In addition, we cannot honor requests for bus changes for students to go to a friend’s house.
