Lead in the Water

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

On September 6, 2016, New York State passed a law requiring public school districts to test their water outlets, both faucets and fountains, for lead contamination and to implement a lead remediation plan where necessary.  A remediation plan is required when a water sample is determined to contain lead levels above the action level.

During recent sampling and testing for lead in the drinking water here at school, some of the outlets had lead levels above the action level.  Although a vast majority of the outlets are not typically areas where water is consumed, we are taking the necessary precautions to decrease the risk of exposure.  Areas where water is used or consumed frequently are less likely to exceed the action level.

  • Any water outlet where water is consumed  that exceeded the state’s action level was removed from service immediately
  • Non-Drinking Water outlets such as hand washing sinks or single outlet sinks in bathrooms were labeled with the required signage indicating for use as hand washing only.
  • All outlets that had lead levels above the action level will be replaced or permanently removed from service
