Dear Parents/Guardians of 5th and 6th Grade Students,
Welcome back to a new school year. School begins on Tuesday September 5th. As you know Buffalo schools have a longer school day this year. At Olmsted, doors open at 7:55 a.m. and dismissal begins after the last class at 2:50 p.m. Students in 5th and 6th grades ride the yellow bus or are walkers. Although always vigilant, we will be extra vigilant the first few days of school to make sure all students have a great opening experience. Staff is always stationed outside and throughout the building to assist students as they make their way to their homerooms, their lockers, and their bus. Please let your child know that should they have a problem, he/she should go to the nearest adult for assistance. We will be afterschool late all next week to make sure all students get home safely on their busses.
After a great deal of thought we decided that students in 5th and 6th grade will be departmentalized this year. Students in 5th grade will have Mrs. Varalla (formerly Ms. Fiorella) for Math, Mrs. Castine for English Language Arts and Mrs. Doldan for science and social studies. Students in grade 6 will have Mr. Chiarilli for Math, Mrs. Minor for English Language Arts and Mr. Gelsomino for science and social studies.
Students in the Dual Language Program will have Ms. Zaffram for Native Language Arts and for science.
I know parents spend a great deal of money on school supplies. In order to help us find the owners of lost items please make sure your child’s name is on their folders and notebooks as well as book bags.
Parents are a necessary part of our school program. Collaboration between home and school is vital for a child to succeed academically and socially. A Meet the Teacher Night is scheduled for September. More information will be given out next week.
Once again, welcome back for the new school year. I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.
